christmas home tour

Hi! Welcome to my 2014 Christmas Home Tour! I’m excited that I have Christmas cheer to share. The last few years  I was either injured or sick and we barely got a tree up in time for Christmas. This year I have been healthy and full of energy so I’ve been able to add a few more Christmas touches to our home.

My 10 year old son noticed the difference as well. He and hubby hung icicle lights on our home while I decorated the door. He kept going on and on about how beautiful our home is this year. He also mentioned that he couldn’t remember the last time our home was so beautiful. Wow. That was a bit of a double-edged sword, but a nice confirmation that a little more cheer was long overdue up in here (up in here).

I didn’t go overboard with the decor but did have fun with different themes in a few rooms. This is the formal living room, or the boxwood room for the purposes of this home tour. I dropped two boxwood wreaths from each french door with brown and cream buffalo check ribbon. The dough bowl is filled with boxwood wreaths, candles in iron and glass holders, antlers and a bird’s nest with eggs.

and our super fat Christmas tree. Last year our brilliant son picked out a fat tree and I learned an important lesson – fat trees have sturdier branches generally speaking. So this year we looked for the fattest tree we could find at the tree farm.

Our tree isn’t anything fancy – we are old-fashioned. We cover it in lights – two different shapes to add interest. This year I added red burlap ribbon and tried to place it as I imagined birds would. Then we covered it in ornaments we have collected and made over the years. I love our tree.

My favorite project this year is the mantel. I found these adorable little live trees on 75% clearance at Home Depot in November. They were $1.75 each. I bought 5 with the plan to line the dining room table. However, the week before Thanksgiving I decided to go through my Christmas decor and offer items for sale to friends and family. The dining room table became the staging and packing area. It’s still a hot mess in there.

I didn’t want my savvy shopping skills or these cute trees to go to waste. On a whim I put a couple up on the mantel. Ohhh – I like this idea much better than the original. The black containers are simply wrapped with burlap and red ribbon. Dew drop lights (my new obsession – I want to cover EVERYTHING in these lights) add just enough sparkle. Wood slices help to vary the heights of the trees. Santa says, “Ho Ho Ho, this is fabulous!” For the final touch, I covered my mirror in black vinyl sheets and wrote Believe in white chalk. It’s amazing the difference that small change made. (Let’s pretend that the Believe is perfectly centered and straight, m’kay?)

Here’s one more favorite nook this year – the Christmas sweater garland! These sweaters are actually wine bottle covers that I’ve collected the past few years. I made tiny hangers from silver wire and hung them from this fresh cedar garland wrapped with lights and red burlap ribbon. I smile each time I walk by.

And that brings us back to the front door which marks the end our this year’s Christmas home tour. By all means this doesn’t mean you need to rush away – you are welcome to stay as long as you like!
